It was springtime everywhere but the Bay Area and San Francisco City Hall last night where we catered the Season 5 Premier Party for HBO’s Game of Thrones, complete with a Black Carpet and “that throne.”
The show’s producers, cast and crew mingled with 3,000 guests at the War Memorial Opera House in Civic Center, with a lucky 1,000 getting to attend the after-party at City Hall. HBO wanted to host the premier event here in the Bay Area because of its huge local following, and tech-savvy workers who are expected to become the first customers of its new stand-alone Internet channel HBO Now.
The menu consisted of local, seasonal and organic fare that embraced the wonderful and diverse produce, meats and seafood the Bay Area is known for. The menu was crafted by Global Gourmet Catering Executive Chef Aaron Zimmer especially for this very special occasion.
Desserts were a spectacle – and featured Chocolate Crowns dusted in gold, filled with pastry cream and fresh seasonal berries. Guests could also partake of a whole host of other dessert selections that included gold-dusted chocolate swords.
The original throne from the series was at the event and available for guests take pictures. Guests could also step into a virtual Westeros world by donning a virtual reality (VR) headset made by Oculus. This new technology let attendees experience climbing “The Wall” from Castle Black, and looking out across Westeros. Once atop the (virtual) wall, guests would turn to see in front of them the vast wilderness of “Beyond the Wall.” Surprises ensued from this vantage point and thrilled guests throughout the evening.
HBO streamed the Black Carpet event live for fans of the show on Facebook. No one died and no dragons were harmed during the course of the evening. Here are a few photos to tide you over until season 5 begins airing April 12.
